About Citizen Schools:

Citizen Schools is a national nonprofit that operates in six states and serves over 5,000 students annually. We aim to transform education through innovative expanded learning time programs at public middle schools. Using a rigorous, evidence-based pedagogy, we provide academic support, a culture of high expectations and “apprenticeships” (hands-on, project-based learning courses taught by volunteer professionals) to students in underserved neighborhoods. As a result, our students develop the skills, knowledge, and beliefs they need to succeed in middle school, advance towards college, and become leaders in their careers and communities. The Massachusetts region currently serves five MA Department of Education schools and nearly 700 students in Boston and Somerville by engaging hundreds of volunteers annually.
