THE ROLE

Citizen Schools seeks a Managing Director of Finance, a key member of the executive team, focused on financial management, strategic leadership, and exemplary modeling of DEI values.

As Managing Director of Finance, you will serve as a member of the executive team and report to the CEO. You will work closely with outsourced teams that manage accounting, HR, and IT. You will work with internal departments to execute on the organization’s strategic goals, annual priorities, and shifting policies and practices, creating an inclusive environment to enable Citizen Schools to deliver core services with supporting back-office functions.

You will be primarily accountable for the financial systems and practices that enable Citizen Schools to thrive.

This is a full-time position for an immediate start, no later than August 2021, and will report to the CEO. Candidates from one of our current markets preferred: Greater Boston area, New York City, Bay Area California/Southern California, Charlotte North Carolina, Houston or Dallas, TX, or Dayton/Cincinnati, OH. Remote work is an option, and some travel to Citizen Schools’ head office in downtown Boston may be required to perform your role.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Member of Citizen Schools Executive Leadership Team

  • Serve as an active member of the Executive Team, helping to identify and execute against organizational vision and strategy;
  • Ensure that the Finance team’s goals and activities are aligned with other functions and support the organizational vision and strategy;
  • Lead the Finance Committee, a sub-committee of the National Board of Directors;
  • Support National Board meeting preparation, reporting, and presentations;
  • Demonstrate management competencies, core competencies, and Citizen Schools values, including exemplary commitment and action to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion;
  • Support clear decision-making and data-driven choices that best position the organization to achieve its goals;
  • Champion inclusive and liberatory practices throughout the organization.

Financial Oversight and Analysis

  • Lead overall management and analysis of the organizational economic model;
  • Lead development and stewardship of annual operating budget, financial position, expense management and financial controls;
  • Oversee contracts with key consultants, including outsourced financial and IT services;
  • In partnership with CEO and VP of External Engagement, monitor cash flow and financial forecast;
  • Facilitate the annual planning process and org-wide goal setting, to operationalize Citizen Schools’ strategy and align with Citizen Schools’ values
  • Develop, maintain and train Citizen Schools staff on financial policies;
  • Oversee public funding contract process;
  • In partnership with financial services partner, lead the annual audits, including Financial Statements, 403b audit, Uniform Guidance (Federal contracts);
  • Oversee and respond to public or private funder audits;
  • Support the External Engagement team on grant budgets, reporting, and compliance;
  • Manage loans and financial instruments, including CARES Act and ARPA stimulus funding;
  • Lead sourcing, evaluation, and contracting with vendor partner using inclusive practices

Payroll and Benefits

  • Oversee 403 B plan and investment committee;
  • In partnership with staff and/or consultants, oversee the payroll process and benefits plan.


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ years of experience in nonprofit financial management or leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and manage systems and processes that support talent, mission, and impact
  • Training and experience with anti-racist practices and a commitment to cultivating a diverse, equitable, just, and inclusive workplace
  • Strong analytical skills, particularly financial, and track record of using data to drive decision-making
  • Experience with fiscal sponsorship, public funding, and AmeriCorps grants an asset
  • Exceptional listening, trust-building, an ability to lead, coach, and support
  • Excellent problem-solving, operational, and communication skills
  • Strong team orientation and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $125,000 and is commensurate with similar roles at non-profit organizations of comparable size, and you will also receive a robust benefits package. Benefits include generous flexible PTO policy, medical, dental, vision coverage, 403b retirement with a match, professional development stipend, and 15+ paid holidays a year including a winter break.
